Nothing is going right for the Detroit Lions this season, between the team's injuries and lacking 4-7 record. Detroit was just handled easily at home, 41-25 against the Houston Texans, on Thanksgiving, and the game prompted criticism of head coach Matt Patricia.

A comparison between Patricia and former head coach Jim Caldwell shows how much the team has struggled under their new coach.

Caldwell served as head coach from 2014-2017, posting a record worse than 8-8 just once. The team took second in the NFC North in Caldwell's first season in 2014, going 11-5 before falling to the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round. The Lions returned to the playoffs in 2016 but also fell in the Wild Card round.

Caldwell posted a solid 36-28 record during his four seaons with the team. Under Patricia, the Lions have gone 13-29-1 in his almost three full seasons. The team went 6-10 in his first season and followed that up with a dismal 3-12-1 record in 2019.

As the team continues to struggle, Caldwell's decent tenure as head coach looks better in comparison to the Lions' current run under Patricia. Detroit should be looking for replacements to get the team back to the playoffs.
