The Miami Marlins may trail the New York Mets by 12 games in the NL East division standings, but this team remains playoff relevant in the Wild Card race thanks to a strong duo at the top of the starting rotation. Miami's one-two punch of Sandy Alcantara and Pablo Lopez has led the rotation to rank seventh in team ERA.

Miami is also eager to return another important member of the staff, Jesús Luzardo. Luzardo hasn't pitched since May 10 thanks to a forearm strain, but continues to make important strides towards a return. That was the case again on Monday.

Jesús Luzardo Injury Update

Marlins insider Christina De Nicola reported Luzardo will throw two innings of live BP on Tuesday. This is a progression, and major next step, from the bullpen sessions he began in July.

Marlins News

Luzardo joined the organization in last year's trade deadline deal for Starling Marte. The results have been mixed, pitching to just a 5.63 ERA across 18 career starts in Miami. The hope is for Luzardo to put this injury situation behind him and return at full strength.

The 24-year-old lefty enjoyed a promising start to his 2022 season prior to the injury. Luzardo owned a 4.03 ERA across 29.0 innings pitched, and was striking out a career-high 12.7 batters per nine innings.

The successes of Alcantara and Lopez showcase Miami's ability to unlock the best of their pitching staff, and Luzardo has the potential to turn that duo into a strong trio upon his return.
