The MLB offseason is officially underway as free agency began last week. While there are plenty of star major-league free agents, one Japanese pro is earning lots of attention as well. Outfielder Masataka Yoshida of the Orix Buffaloes is expected to be posted by his team in order to sign with an MLB franchise.

While he has been connected to plenty of teams so far -- like the New Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs -- the Seattle Mariners have emerged in the race as well. The Mariners have reportedly done extensive scouting on Yoshinda and are considered one of his top potential destinations.

Seattle is no stranger to bringing in Japanese-born players, signing the most famous and successful one of all time in Ichiro Suzuki.

Yoshida is known as a five-tool player who hits for an incredible average and has an insane ability to get on base. Last season, Yoshida slashed .336/.449/.559. He's also a left-handed bat, adding to why teams are attracted to him.

Getting on base close to half the time you come up to the plate is something every team in the majors could use, which is why he's expected to see a bunch of interest in his services.

Of course, the Mariners aren't the only team that has signed a successful Japanese player. Teams like the Yankees (Hideki Matsui and Masahiro Tanaka), Los Angeles Angels (Shoehei Ohtani), Cubs (Seiya Suzuki) and Texas Rangers (Yu Darvish) have all done it before. And they all could be willing to spend big this offseason.

There have been few clues as to who Yoshida prefers, but what is clear is that he will have plenty of choices this offseason.
