After not pitching for two full MLB seasons because of a Tommy John surgery, Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander enjoyed one of the most dominant seasons by a starting pitcher in recent memory. The 39-year-old veteran led the league with a minuscule 1.75 ERA, 0.829 WHIP and just 6.0 hits allowed per nine innings.

His efforts propelled the Astros to a World Series championship and Verlander has been lauded for his efforts during award season. Verlander already took home the AL Cy Young Award and player's choice Outstanding Pitcher of the Year, and walked away with another piece of hardware on Tuesday night.

MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported Verlander was named the 2022 American League Comeback Player of the Year. He's the first Astros player to win this award.

Veteran slugger Albert Pujols won these honors in the NL.

Despite yet another award win, the Astros are much more focused on re-signing their ace. Verlander opted out of the final year of his current contract to hit unrestricted free agency (perhaps the final time in his career). He'll be a hot commodity during the offseason as one of three proven aces on the market, joined by Jacob deGrom and Carlos Rodon.
