Justin Verlander capped off his brilliant 2022 campaign with the AL Cy Young Award on Wednesday night, the third time he's brought home the honors in his illustrious career.

Now, Verlander's attention turns to his free agency. The nine-time All-Star opted out of his deal with the Houston Astros in order to add both years and money to his contract. He recently shared some initial thoughts on the overall process.

According to team insider Brian McTaggart, Verlander said "I'm going to be in a situation where the market will dictate this and we'll see what happens. Obviously, there are other people that are interested. Jim [Crane] understands that."

It's quite clear the market is going to be in high-demand for Verlander's surfaces. He's the greatest pitcher of his generation and proved that age will not slow him down, considering he won the Cy Young after not pitching for nearly two years because of Tommy John surgery.

Recent projections point to Verlander getting a two-year deal in the neighborhood of $72 million overall (or $36 million per year). That's a big bounce from his current contract worth $25 million in average annual value (AAV). There's a chance Verlander comes close to Max Scherzer AAV record of $43.3 million from the New York Mets.
