Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has one of the most outgoing personalities in the entire league. It's what endeared him to many after he stepped away from coaching, earning him notoriety for all of his antics while as a media member.
However, Gruden may have landed himself in trouble after recent comments he made to San Francisco 49ers free agent Richard Sherman.
Gruden went beyond just normal coach-to-player praise, openly discussing Sherman's impending free agency and making an active attempt to recruit the defensive back on air. Gruden's bold words seemed to get the DB's attention, but they'll like get the league's, too.
"Richard Sherman, if you are a free agent, which there is a rumor you are, we are looking for an alpha presence in our secondary. Somebody that could play this Hawk 3-press technique with the read step. If you’re available and interested, maybe you and I can get together at some point off-air.”- Jon Gruden
While it's the offseason for most, players and teams aren't supposed to have "official" contact about free agency until just before March 17, when the new league year starts. Gruden's recruitment of Sherman directly goes against the league's tampering rule that forbids members of teams trying to "induce a person to seek employment with that club."
Gruden may be looking at a fine in the next couple of days, but perhaps that'll be a small price to pay if his early interest helps land a veteran presence for his secondary.
