New York Islanders vs. Tampa Bay Lightning News, Analysis, and Picks

The Tampa Bay Lightning are in unfamiliar territory trailing for the first time in a playoff series this postseason after dropping Game 1 to the New York Islanders. New York played their game plan to perfection on Sunday, stealing the opening contest in Tampa. The NHL's second-best defensive team in the regular season was able to contain the Lightning's dangerous top-line in Game 1.

Nikita Kucherov (the postseason leading scorer), Brayden Point and Ondrej Palat were held to just one shot on goal at even strength. Point was able to score on the powerplay, with Kucherov registering a secondary assist, but it was too little too late as the goal came in the game's final minute to make it 2-1.

The other part of "Isle style" produced the game's opening goal in class counterattack fashion. Josh Bailey struck from a great defensive position to intercept a pass at his blueline. He then found Mathew Barzal for a breakaway which the Islanders regular-season leading scorer converted for his fourth goal in five games. Barzal, who got off to a slow start in these playoffs, has seven points in his past six games.

Ryan Pulock put New York ahead for good, just over five minutes into the final frame. Pulock teed up one of his patented heavy slapshots to pot his fourth of this postseason. The Isles' blueliner, who had just two goals all season, leads all defensemen with three game-winning goals in these playoffs.

The defending NHL champions will look to do something they did a few times during last year's Stanley Cup run; bounce back. Tampa twice dropped the series opener before taking the set in 2020's postseason, including the Cup final against the Dallas Stars. Tampa has not dropped two games in a row in these playoffs and rebounded from each loss with a win of at least two goals. The Lightning followed their postseason setbacks with games of six, four, and six goals hitting the over in two of three of those games.

Victor Hedman leads all defensemen and is third in this postseason with 11 assists.  New York has won just three of 11 in Tampa, while the favorite is 5-2 in their past seven meetings. The under is 3-0-1 in their past four head-to-heads and 4-1-2 in TB. New York has won four straight playoff games as the underdog, while the Lightning are 10-4 in their past 14 postseason games as a favorite.
