The NFL world was dealt a surprise Thursday morning when the Denver Broncos signed Russell Wilson to a five-year, $245 million extension. Unsurprisingly, Baltimore Ravens fans are wondering what this deal means for franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson, who's also looking to be extended.

Rumors have swirled that Jackson was looking for something similar to the fully guaranteed $230 million that the Cleveland Browns gave Deshaun Jackson. However, NFL contracts expert Joel Corry reports that the likelihood of Jackson getting a Watson-type deal has decreased after Wilson's extension was signed.

Lamar Jackson Contract Extension

Many NFL owners reportedly felt that Watson's mega-deal would signal a shift in quarterback contracts. Wilson's new extension proves that isn't the case, much like the one that Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray signed in July that only has $160 million of the $230.5 million guaranteed.

Corry adds that "Watson's deal is an anomaly, much like Kirk Cousins' was in 2018," meaning it's more likely that Jackson gets a Wilson- or Murray-type deal.

It'll be interesting to see how much (guaranteed) money Jackson is looking for in his next contract. While any offers that the Ravens have made to their signal-caller are unknown, the 25-year-old took to Twitter on Thursday to clarify that Baltimore has not offered him a fully-guaranteed $250 million deal.

Jackson has been nothing but consistent since arriving in Baltimore. The former 32nd overall pick has averaged started in 49 of the 58 games he's played in a Ravens uniform, completing 852 passes for 9,967 yards, 84 touchdowns and 31 interceptions while being named 2019 NFL MVP and making two Pro-Bowl appearances along the way.

The Ravens love Jackson, and their best chance at success is to lock him down. Only time will tell when the two sides can agree to a deal, especially with neither wanting discussions to be a distraction this fall.

Lamar Jackson MVP Odds

One thing that could help Jackson get the money that he's looking for is by adding another MVP trophy to his cabinet. For now, the Ravens QB is tied with Murray for the 10th-best (+2000) 2022 NFL MVP odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
