The Cleveland Guardians look to start a new era for their franchise with the 2022 MLB season's Opening Day less than a week away. While fans were already excited to see the newly-named team perform, the Guardians have since added to that by announcing who'll throw out the first pitch for their home opener.

The Guardians announced Friday that two-time Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks will throw out the first pitch when Cleveland hosts the San Francisco Giants on Friday, April 15.

Hanks is hardly a stranger to the Cleveland area. He interned at the city's Great Lakes Theater Festival during the 1970s and even won a Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor.

Hanks has also been involved with the Guardians before and actually played a notable role in the team's rebranding, with the 65-year-old actor doing the voiceover when they announced their new name in July 2021.

Hank said that he's "honored to return to Cleveland and Progressive Field" for the 2022 home opener and that he's been a fan of the Guardians ever since he attended his first game in 1977. Needless to say, fans are hoping that his presence will be enough to help Cleveland start off the new era 1-0 at home.

The Guardians will need all the celebrity support they can get if they hope to go on an improbable championship run this year. FanDuel Sportsbook has them listed as having +7500 odds (T-No. 20) to win the 2022 World Series.
