The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals meet in a crucial AFC North battle this weekend, but one key player will be missing from the action. Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has been ruled out with a hip injury, meaning cornerback Greg Newsome will have to wait a bit longer before he can cover him.
Browns vs Bengals Week 8
Newsome told reporters that he was "pissed" when he heard the news of Chase's injury and it's worth providing some context as to why. Over the summer, Chase spoke on the Bengals/Browns rivalry and mentioned that he doesn't view Newsome as "elite." It set the stage for a tense meeting this season.
The 2021 first-round pick has always taken the comments in stride and explained on Friday that he never felt disrespected by Chase. Newsome reiterated that his own opinion is all that matters and proving that on the field is his goal. His answers were backed up by a strong sense of confidence.
Even though Chase is injured, Newsome has his work cut out for him in Week 8. The duo of Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins have combined for 910 yards and 5 touchdowns across seven games. Shutting down a passing attack that balled out with 481 yards through the air in Week 7 will be no easy task.
The Browns will face off against the Bengals again in Week 14, which is on the tail end of Chase's 4-to-6-week recovery timeline. That game could have a lot of impact on the race for an AFC North title, so it's one to circle on the calendar. At the very least, Newsome has it tucked in the back of his mind.
