Giants Bring Up New Arrival After Brandon Crawford Hits Injured List

The San Francisco Giants were hopeful shortstop Brandon Crawford could avoid the injured list after a home plate collision last week, but that is no longer the case. The veteran was placed on the 10-day IL Sunday and the team has called up recent signing Yermin Mercedes to take his spot on the roster.

While Crawford suffered knee inflammation, the impact could've been much worse. Atlanta Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud fell on the 35-year-old's leg in an ugly play at the plate. MRIs taken after the game showed no structural damage and Crawford shouldn't miss more than a few weeks of action.
Fans will get now get their first glimpse of Mercedes in a Giants uniform. The slugger was claimed off of waivers in the middle of June following his departure from the Chicago White Sox. Mercedes is slashing .250/.370/.398 at the Triple-A level in 2022 to go along with 4 home runs and 5 stolen bases.
Mercedes rose to fame during the 2021 season when he came out of nowhere to be named April's Rookie of the Month. The 29-year-old dominated with a .415 batting average to go along with 5 home runs and 5 doubles in 22 games. He hasn't been able to recapture that magic since, though.
The Giants employ a heavy left-handed batting lineup, which means the right-handed batting Mercedes could see a lot of playing time at DH. It's worth mentioning he has also crushed left-handed pitching in his career to the tune of a .339/.386/.523 slash line across 70 plate appearances.
San Francisco has odds set at +3000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
