Frontrunner for Seahawks' Starting QB Job Revealed

The Seattle Seahawks are faced with the unenviable task of finding a successor to a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in 2022. Veteran Geno Smith is one option to start this season after coming on in relief of Wilson last year, though fans are more eager to see what newcomer Drew Lock can do as he looks to rebuild his reputation.

It's now been revealed who has the early edge in this QB competition as OTAs kick into high gear.

Seahawks Starting QB 2022

Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said in a radio interview it's Smith who is the early frontrunner to take over the reigns from Wilson. Waldron admits Smith's "familiarity" with the Seahawks' offense is a key factor at this point with teams unable to practice at full speed.

This isn't too much of a surprise. Smith started three games in place of the injured Wilson last year, averaging 190.3 yards per game and a 70.51% completion percentage. He threw for 4 TDs during this span with 0 INTs, showing he could take care of the ball at the very least.

Smith ended up going 1-2 in his starter stint, and his numbers weren't out of this world, so it's not like Lock is out of the competition yet. The veteran having the edge is based on where things stand coming into offseason workouts, but Lock can win the coaches over with a strong showing in practice and the preseason.

Who emerges as the Seahawks' Week 1 starter will be the hottest storyline around Seattle heading into the regular season. Perhaps an intense QB battle will push these siganl-callers to the next level and give the team someone to depend on long term.
