With most of the top MLB free agents already off the board this winter, some fans, and experts are already looking ahead to next year's free-agent class. The biggest name expected to be available is Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani, who will likely command a monster contract given his elite abilities on the mound and in the batter's box.
One former general manager has a good idea of where Ohtani will end up.
Shohei Ohtani Rumors
According to former New York Mets GM Steve Phillips, he believes Ohtani will sign with the Mets.
This would not be surprising at all, as New York has asserted its will this winter by gobbling up seemingly every top free agent. Steve Cohen's Mets have made it clear that money is no object for them and that they're willing to do whatever it takes to land the sport's biggest stars.
As the 2021 AL MVP, Ohtani certainly qualifies. He's also one of the most famous players in the game and would give Cohen a true superstar to match the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge.
Only a handful of teams will even be able to afford Ohtani, but the Mets are definitely one of them. That alone makes them a good bet to acquire him, especially given the team's aggressive approach in free agency.
