This year is the first iteration of the PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic, which was formerly known as the Quicken Loans National. With a new course and new tournament, it's always a little harder to pinpoint which golfers you should keep and eye on.
With that in mind, let's take a look at some guys to watch out for when building your fantasy team this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Dustin Johnson is the heavy betting favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, for a reason. On a course that should cater to longer hitters, Johnson ranks No. 6 on the PGA Tour in average driving distance. Additionally he ranks No. 3 in scoring average and No. 18 in greens in regulation (GIR), which should be useful for greens that are well protected by bunkers.
Gary Woodland also ranks high in many of the same categories as Johnson. He's currently No. 11 in driving distance, No. 8 in GIR and No. 1 in birdie average. Woodland is coming off an impressive U.S. Open victory, and he could very well continue this momentum into another impressive showing in Detroit this weekend.
Bubba Watson has always been able to bomb it with the best of them, ranking No. 4 on tour in driving distance this season. Although, he hasn't been able to keep his driver as accurate as he's hoped, ranking No. 150 in driving accuracy. If he can have a good week in that department, Watson should be near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. His creative shot-making ability should also allow him to attack the greens in different ways than most other golfers.
Viktor Hovland has burst onto the scene this year as the low amateur at the Masters and the U.S. Open, where he finished tied for 12th place. Though he doesn't have any rankings on the PGA Tour yet, he appears poised to continue striving toward achieving his first win on Tour soon. If you're looking for a golfer with longer odds, or one with more of a value fantasy play angle, Hovland could be a great fit based solely on his recent performances.
