After going 4-11-1 in the 2020 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans are hoping for a better outcome in 2021. One of the players who's been expected to help with that is the 10th overall pick from this year's draft, DeVonta Smith. Unfortunately, the Eagles have received some concerning news regarding the young wideout as the 2021 campaign quickly approaches.
It was announced on Monday that Smith suffered an ankle sprain during training camp over the weekend and is now listed as week-to-week.
DeVonta Smith Injury Update
The silver lining is that this injury happened now and not closer to the Eagles season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 12. The six weeks or so before then should hopefully give Smith enough time to recover so that he can be the difference-maker that Philadelphia envisions him being one day.
The Eagles struggled to move the ball through the air last season. They averaged 207.9 passing yards per game in 2020, which ranked fifth-worst in the NFL. Considering how Travis Fulgham ended the campaign with a team-leading 539 receiving yards, it's clear that Philadelphia needed a real pass-catching playmaker. Fortunately, Smith appears to be that guy. He recorded 117 receptions, 1,856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns with the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2020, so the potential is there to find success at the NFL level.
The Eagles have +8500 odds (26th) to win Super Bowl 56, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. If they want to see those odds improve, they're going to need Smith to be as healthy as possible once September rolls around.
