The Sony Open in Hawaii brings us a field filled with some big-name golfers just one week after an exciting playoff finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
A strong field brings plenty of great fantasy golf picks, but sometimes you need to dig deeper and find a more unexpected pick for the week.
That's where these three dark horse fantasy golf picks for the Sony Open come into play.
Pat Perez is a respectable +1200 to finish in the top-five and +650 to finish in the top 10 this week, ranking 19th and 22nd, respectively, among the field at FanDuel Sportsbook. He has been in solid form in recent events, finishing T8 his last time out (Mayakoba Golf Classic) and third in October at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, giving him top-10 finishes in two of his last four events.
Waialae Country Club has been very friendly to Hudson Swafford in the past. His third-place finish in the 2019 Sony Open came on the heels of a disappointing 54th in 2018, but before that he finished 13th in 2017 and ninth in 2016. Top-15 finishes in three of his last four cracks at the course is nothing to scoff at, though he's not getting much respect from the betting markets, and +750 odds to finish top 20 could be underrating him.
The volatility in Vaughn Taylor's performances could scare some people off, but his upside is hard to deny. September and October weren't his months, finishing no better than T41 while missing one cut in four events, but he showed his upside in November, closing out the 2019 calendar year with a pair of top-10 finishes, shooting 13 and 19 under.
