The Detroit Lions have been trying to find their franchise running back for quite some time. It looked like Kerryon Johnson was going to step up into that role, but injury issues have caused him to miss a combined 14 games over the past two years.

Detroit drafted D'Andre Swift to fill that void, and though he'll still be competing with Johnson, he's a really intriguing fantasy football asset in 2020.

D'Andre Swift Fantasy Football Value 2020

Swift currently carries an average draft position (ADP) of RB26. He's a solid player to target in that range, though he probably is most valuable in PPR formats.

He caught 56 combined passes over the past two seasons at Georgia and drew rave marks as a receiver during the pre-draft process. Kerryon, meanwhile, caught just 10 of his 15 targets last season, so it's fair to expect Swift to be the team's primary third-down back from day one.

He might not see enough rushing volume to reach his full potential in 2020, however. Kerryon averaged 17.4 attempts per game over his first five contests before going down in Week 7. It's unlikely Swift will be able to steal that role away, especially given the disadvantages facing rookies this offseason due to the pandemic.

If Kerryon were to miss time, as he has every year of his career, it would be a completely different story. Being the lead back in Detroit is more valuable than you might think, as the Lions were a top-12 scoring offense before Matthew Stafford went down in 2019.

Ultimately, Swift's fantasy value will be completely tied to his role. If he beats out Kerryon or the incumbent starter misses time again, Swift will be an every-week fantasy starter. But there's also a chance he does little more than contribute on third downs.

We have him ranked as the No. 69 overall player in our 2020 fantasy football rankings.
