Although the St. Louis Cardinals' fanbase may be clamoring for a shortstop with better offensive production, it doesn't seem like an option. General manager John Mozeliak recently revealed, per a report from insider Ken Rosenthal, that the club is seemingly content with Tommy Edman as an everyday option there.

Instead, Mozeliak outlined a different priority for his squad heading into MLB's annual Winter Meetings -- a place known for offseason chaos.

According to Rosenthal, the Cardinals have their eyes set on "acquiring an everyday catcher," calling the process their No. 1 priority.

The need for a catcher stems from Yadier Molina's retirement. Molina has been St. Louis' everyday backstop for nearly two decades, so his absence is a larger hole to fill than most other departures and retirements around baseball.

Willson Contreras is the most notable free-agent catcher on this year's market, and some players on the Cardinals have already begun recruiting him.

Rosenthal also mentioned Mozeliak's discussions around the outfield configuration. Mozeliak would not rule out adding a veteran outfielder, but that addition would "likely would be a backup behind Tyler O’Neill, Dylan Carlson and Lars Nootbaar." Top prospect Jordan Walker is also in the mix.

It sounds like St. Louis will be busy this winter even after winning the NL Central last year. The Cardinals currently have the 10th-best World Series odds on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
