The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' road to back-to-back Super Bowl Championships continues to get tougher and tougher. Another star player has gone down with an injury as linebacker Shaquil Barrett has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL and ACL. The hope is that he will return in time for the playoffs.
Shaquil Barrett Injury Update
Barrett left the Buccaneers' Week 16 game in pain early in the second half. His absence leaves Tampa Bay without a ton of edge rushers given Jason Pierre-Paul is also banged up. Head coach Bruce Arians will now have to rely on Anothony Nelson and Joe Tryon-Smith to get the job done.
This is certainly not the update fans were hoping for. Barrett is a two-time Pro Bowler and was in the midst of another great season before going down. Overall, the seventh-year pro has racked up 51 tackles, 22 quarterback hits, 10.0 sacks, 4 pass breakups and 3 forced fumbles in 15 games played.
To make matters worse, this type of injury can be hard to bounce back from in a matter of weeks. It can impact a player's ability to burst and make sudden movements. It wouldn't be surprising to see Barrett's stay on the sideline last into the playoffs, which severely hurts this defense as a whole.
For now, the Buccaneers will look to keep riding the high of winning their first AFC South title since 2007 when they face the New York Jets in Week 17 NFL action. Tampa Bay heads into that matchup as heavy 13.5-point road favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
