The Milwaukee Brewers opened the 2022 MLB season as one of the top teams in baseball, but a 2-8 record over their last 10 games has seen them fall to second place in the NL Central. If the Brewers are to turn things around, they might need to make some moves ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline.
One player that the Brewers could potentially target is Washington Nationals designated hitter Nelson Cruz, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Nelson Cruz Brewers Rumors
Now that the DH position is universal, Feinsand says that the veteran slugger could be getting a lot of attention over the coming weeks. With the Brewers averaging only 2.9 runs over their last 10 games, second worst in the MLB over that stretch, it makes sense for them to target Cruz.
After a slow start to the season, Cruz is batting .414 with three home runs and 15 RBIs over his last 20 games. He was dealing with a back injury last week, but seems to have quickly recovered and should have no issue continuing his current play.
Not only would Cruz help Milwaukee in the regular season, but he also brings 50 games of postseason experience to the table. Although he's yet to win a World Series, he was named 2011 ALCS MVP and has 18 HRs and 38 RBIs in the playoffs that would be attractive to any contender.
The longer the Brewers' struggles go on, the tougher it'll be to climb out of their hole. Perhaps trading for Cruz sooner than later can help them bounce back ahead of schedule.
Brewers World Series Odds
Despite their struggles, the Brewers still have +1500 odds (T-No. 6) to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook. Only time will tell if trading for a veteran like Cruz can help improve those odds before it's too late.
