A 2-10 record over the Milwaukee Brewers' last 12 games has left the club looking for help. Injuries and inconsistent play from the starting rotation forced the Brewers to look for an additional arm, which is exactly what they found on Tuesday.
The Brewers have announced that they have claimed right-handed veteran starter Chi Chi Gonzalez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. This news came after Milwaukee moved RHP Freddy Peralta to the 60-day injured list.
Brewers Roster News
With Peralta sidelined longer than expected and Brandon Woodruff on a 15-day IL stint of his own, it makes sense that the Brewers wouldn't hesitate on claiming Gonzalez. After all, the 30-year-old brings 63 career games (49 starts) to the table and prevents Milwaukee from rushing a younger player into a role that they're not ready for.
Having said that, Brewers fans shouldn't expect a Cy Young performance from Gonzalez. While he's looked solid in eight Triple-A appearances (five starts) in 2022 (2-2, 3.44 ERA), that hasn't been the case in his Major-League appearances.
Gonzalez gave up six runs on 12 hits over seven innings pitched across two starts with the Twins this season, racking up a 7.71 ERA. On top of that, he hasn't had a sub-5.00 ERA campaign since he was a rookie in 2015.
Will Gonzalez single-handedly turn Milwaukee's fortunes around? Probably not, but he's a cheap backend placeholder until Peralta and Woodruff, hopefully, make quick recoveries.
Brewers World Series Odds
Recent struggles aside, the Brewers remain one of FanDuel Sportsbook's top 2022 World Series picks. Milwaukee currently sits at +1500, tying the club with the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres for sixth-best odds.
