Wide receiver Brandin Cooks will make his return on Sunday after his Week 9 absence was explained to be because of personal reasons. It'll be a bit different this time around, though, as he will no longer be a team captain. It's yet another detail in the growing saga between Cooks and the Houston Texans.
Houston Texans News
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the removal of Cooks' captaincy is due to his recent public and private criticism of the Texans. The veteran wideout has not held back in expressing his concerns after not being traded at the deadline. Cooks has made it clear to everyone that he is sick of losing.
"I think we all want to win. We're all frustrated in some sense. That's where I stand with that."- Cooks on his criticism of Texans
It's worth mentioning that Cooks likely would've gotten his wish if it wasn't for the $18 million he is fully guaranteed in 2023. The idea of sending Houston draft picks to take on that kind of contract makes little to no sense for contending teams. Trade talks will likely resume in the offseason.
The hope was that time away from the team would allow Cooks to regroup and get his mind right for the remainder of the schedule. That turned out to be the case as Cooks came back to practice with the same work ethic he has been praised for in the past. He has a chance to prove himself on Sunday.
Cooks returns to the field as quarterback Davis Mills' top target. The 29-year-old has logged 354 yards and 1 touchdown on 32 receptions (53 targets) across seven games played. He averages a reliable 12.5 yards per reception as well as 66.9 yards per game in three seasons spent in Houston.
