The Buffalo Bills' defense took a hit this offseason after it was revealed linebacker Andre Smith would be suspended six games due to a violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. Now heading into Week 7, Smith was eligible to return to the team.
However, Buffalo has elected to part ways with the fourth-year pro instead.
The Bills announced they have released Smith on Monday ahead of his potential return. This is an unfortunate end to his two-year run in Buffalo after carving out a role on the special teams unit.
The LB originally joined the Bills in 2020, appearing 12 games that season and recording a forced fumble. He then returned for the 2021 campaign, where he played in 15 games. Smith suited up in all five postseason games from 2020-2021 as well.
It remains to be seen if the veteran linebacker finds a spot on another team's roster or practice squad. His experience -- which includes another 19 games played for the Carolina Panthers from 2018-2019 -- could help his prospects as he looks to put his suspension behind him.
The Bills, meanwhile, head into a bye in Week 7. They currently own a 5-1 record and the best odds to win the Super Bowl on FanDuel Sportsbook at +290.
