Belmont Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 5/7/23
By FairwayJay

The Belmont Spring/Summer Meet continues on Sunday with 9 races, including a pair of minor stakes. Post time is 1 p.m. ET from Belmont Park.
As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.
(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 3 is the $175,000 Beaugay Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Surprisingly (3/1) is the top pick by numberFire's data and Top Race Reports (ECHR).
The East Coast Handicapping Report notes that Surprisingly is healthy and in good form coming off a graded stakes win in Tampa in Feb and a third-place finish after that in a Grade 3. There was also a jockey change to Junior Alvarado for this genuine filly getting better with solid speed figures.
Top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. comes in from Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby to ride Marketsegmentation (5/2) for top turf trainer Chad Brown, who also has Consumer Spending (4/1), Kalifornia Queen (12/1) and Veronica Greene (10/1) running in the race, making up half the field of eight runners.
2. Volatility and Prerequisite, Race 8
FanDuel Racing Odds: 12/1 and 5/1

Race 8 is a Maiden Special Weight for fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf. The favorite is Financial Advice (5/2) with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding for EPO trainer Chad Brown. She gets more ground and is easy to find as a win contender. The numberFire algorithm picks Irish-bred Libretto (8/1) on top with John Velazquez riding.
The East Coast Handicapping Report notes that Volatility (12/1) could upset as a daughter of Empire Maker out of a Tapit mare. She comes in from Tampa, stretches out and faces a mediocre group of runners. Trainer Chad Brown's other runner is a threat with Prerequisite (5/1) ridden by Flavien Prat.
3. Star Devine and Messidor, Race 9
FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 6/1

Race 9 is the $150,000 License Fee Stakes for older fillies and mares sprinting 6 furlongs. Both numberFire and Top Race Reports have Irish-bred Star Devine (3/1) winning and another Irish runner Messidor (6/1) hitting the board.
Star Devine breaks from the outside 10 post with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding. She'll be moving late passing regressing runners. Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Javier Castellano brings Messidor from off the pace having run well over this turf course previously.
