The Washington Football Team shocked a lot of people in the 2020 NFL season when they won the NFC East despite having a 7-9 record. With +260 odds (2nd) to win the division again, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, the pressure is on for the franchise to repeat that success. One player who can help Washington get there is second-year running back Antonio Gibson.
The Athletic has a lot of faith in Gibson putting on quite a show next season, considering how the publication named him as Washington's best candidate to have a breakout performance in 2021. With all the buzz surrounding him as he heads into his sophomore year, don't be surprised if Gibson's fantasy outlook is rising too.
Antonio Gibson Fantasy Outlook
Gibson suited up in 14 games for Washington in 2020, drawing 10 starts along the way. By the end of the season, he had recorded 795 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 170 attempts. What's encouraging is that Gibson put up those numbers even though Washington averaged just 99.8 rushing yards (26th) on 24.9 attempts (T-23rd) per game.
Fortunately, it's looking like Washington's run game should be improved in 2021 — at least on paper. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the new signal-caller in town and certainly has more arm strength than Alex Smith, so opposing teams will respect downfield throws more often, giving more space for Gibson. The team also brought in former Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel as another offensive weapon who could open up the field as well.
FantasyPros sees a lot of potential in Gibson as well. They're currently listing his average draft position as 23.8, which means there's a good chance that most leagues will see him disappear before the end of Round 2. Considering how FantasyPros is listing him as the 13th-ranked RB, it's looking like a lot of people are catching on to Gibson's potential as an RB1.
