The first week of the NBA season has provided us with some high-level drama and offensive numbers are up everywhere around the league. One player, in particular, is making his case for MVP, while another has taken a step back after receiving a mega-increase in pay.

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, the player on the rise, has been phenomenal to start the season. Most notably on Wednesday night at home against the Philadelphia 76ers, he posted a season-high in points (32), rebounds (18), assists (10) and steals (2). He also added three blocks, which is one shy of his season-high. The Greek Freek is also the first player since Wilt Chamberlain (in 1965-66) to have 25-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in his first four games of the season.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns, on the other hand, only has one double-double through five games after signing a five-year, $190 million contract. Perhaps, that massive contract and the Jimmy Butler saga are a bit more distracting than people around the T-Wolves want to admit. Dreadfully, KAT is averaging career-lows in points, rebounds, assists, and steals at this point early on.

In fact, The Greek is doing so much better at this point in the season, that his worst FanDuel-fantasy-point performance is better than KAT's best effort.

Giannis Antetokounmpo:

10/24 vs PHI: 78.6 FP (third-best of any NBA player this season)

10/22 vs NYK: 58.0 FP

10/19 vs IND: 54.5 FP

10/17 at CHA: 53.6 FP

Karl-Anthony Towns

10/24 at TOR: 33.1 FP

10/22 vs IND: 38.0 FP

10/20 at DAL: 46.0 FP

10/19 vs CLE: 33.8 FP

10/17 at SAS: 20.3 FP

At some point, KAT has to turn this horrific start around. After all, he posted an NBA-high 68 double-doubles last season.

The Greek is a legitimate threat to win the MVP award this season. FanDuel Sportsbook had his odds at +410 before the first NBA game tipped off this season, tied for highest in the league with Anthony Davis and LeBron James. Obviously, they saw this in the making.
