Now a month into the 2019 MLB regular season, one of the best closers in baseball remains unsigned. Craig Kimbrel, a seven-time All-Star, has been linked to teams like the Milwaukee Brewers and the Atlanta Braves, but there are some clubs that could make a surprise run at the reliever.
Here are three teams that could potentially swoop in and sign Kimbrel.
3. Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs are 13-6 following an ugly 1-6 start to the season. While the team's record has improved, Chicago could still use some serious help in the bullpen. Cubs' relievers have blown four saves this season, and adding an arm like Kimbrel could be enough to make them a World Series contender.
2. New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have been ravaged by injuries this season, but have fought their way to a 17-11 record. However, the Yankees' bullpen has struggled during the first month of the season with five blown saves and a collective ERA of 4.58. Adding Kimbrel would give New York one of the scariest late-inning combinations in MLB, pairing him with closer Aroldis Chapman, Zach Britton and Adam Ottavino. Plus, Kimbrel would surely like to face his old team, the Boston Red Sox, in some pivotal AL East division games this summer.
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been one of the splashiest teams in MLB over the past few seasons. They always seem to be in play when a big name is available, and Kimbrel certainly fits that description. The Dodgers' bullpen could also clearly benefit from Kimbrel's services. Lining up Kimbrel with another electric closer like Kenley Jansen could finally be enough to take this team over the top in October.
