The Jacksonville Jaguars' rebuild hit the accelerator when it became clear the team was getting the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Likely to select a generational talent at quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville could turn its franchise around in a hurry.
But in order to maximize the presumptive No. 1 overall pick, the Jaguars will need to nail the rest of their offseason as well. Thankfully, they're projected to have an NFL-high $79 million in available cap space, per Spotrac. Here are three free agents they should sign to build around Lawrence.
Jacksonville Jaguars News
3. Hunter Henry, TE, Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers surely don't want to lose Hunter Henry, who is one of the best young tight ends in football. But with his injury history, Los Angeles might decide he's not worth the risk. The Jaguars would be a perfect fit for him if he walks. Henry would be a significant upgrade over Tyler Eifert, both as a blocker and a pass-catcher. The 26-year-old should also be able to get a lot more money from Jacksonville than he would by sticking in LA. Bringing in a legit safety blanket for their new franchise QB is a no-brainer for the Jags.
2. Trent Williams, OT, San Francisco 49ers
The interior of the Jaguars' offensive line is pretty solid, with all three starters earning a grade of at least 67.0 from ProFootballFocus. The tackles were a different story, however. LT Cam Robinson graded out at 61.8, and RT Jawaan Taylor had a putrid 56.5 rating. Signing Trent Williams, who was PFF's No. 1 overall tackle in 2021, would make life easier for Lawrence from day one. Landing Williams on a short-term, big-money deal makes a lot of sense.
1. Chris Godwin, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Chris Godwin just won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he's not a lock to return in 2021. With Tampa Bay needing to re-sign a ton of key cogs, the Bucs might not have the capital to retain Godwin. If they let him walk, Jacksonville should get on the phone immediately. The 24-year-old fits perfectly with Jacksonville's developmental timeline. The Penn State product is also a true No. 1 option who would allow DJ Chark to settle into a role as an overqualified No. 2 receiver. With this move, Jacksonville's WR corps goes from uninspiring to among the most exciting in the league. That's exactly the type of addition this team needs to make to maximize Lawrence's talent. If they strike out on Godwin, Allen Robinson or Kenny Golladay are logical targets as well.
