The Kansas City Chiefs consistently have one of the best passing attacks in the league, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. While the former NFL MVP's success has come thanks to having superstar pass-catching options like WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce, Kansas City still lacks a legitimate No. 2 wideout.
The Chiefs have tested out Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle in the role, but neither player has stepped up on a consistent basis. If Kansas City wants to remain as one of the top teams, bringing in some outside help is a must.
Fortunately, there are some reliable free-agent options that could help the Chiefs. Spotrac lists them as having approximately $11.4 million to spend, so the resources are there to pull off some deals.
Here's a look at three free-agent wide receivers that the Chiefs must target to give Mahomes a third weapon.
Chiefs Free Agency Targets
1. Odell Beckham
Back in January, it was reported that the Chiefs will look to pursue Odell Beckham in free agency. The three-time Pro Bowl wideout provided to be a reliable weapon during the Los Angeles Rams' Super Bowl LVI run, catching 21-of-26 targets (80.8%) for 288 yards and two touchdowns in four games. Beckham has since undergone successful knee surgery and expects to be back at full strength sometime during the 2022 season. If that's the case, a healthy OBJ could take the Chiefs to the next level. It was only a handful of seasons ago that Beckham had his most recent 1,000-yard season and playing with someone of Mahomes' caliber could help him get back there.
2. JuJu Smith-Schuster
A season-ending shoulder injury held JuJu Smith-Schuster to just five games in 2021. While he didn't look impressive in the games he did play, a change of scenery could be what he needs to bounce back. Even if it's only on a one-year deal, playing for the Chiefs could do wonders for his career. For starters, he wouldn't have to deal with the pressure of being the No. 1 option with Hill and Kelce involved. Mahomes is also more than capable of spreading the ball out, which could take Smith-Schuster back to a level that he hasn't been at since 2018. Plus Kansas City can likely sign him for cheaper due to him coming off of a significant injury.
3. A.J. Green
After some fans and experts wrote him off following an underwhelming 2020 season, veteran wideout A.J. Green bounced back last year. The 33-year-old had 54 receptions in 16 games with the Arizona Cardinals, finishing with 848 receiving yards and three touchdowns. A deal between Green and the Chiefs would benefit both sides. When it comes to Kansas City, Mahomes would be given a seven-time Pro Bowler who still has high upside at this stage of his career. He'll also be cheaper than the other high-end options. For Green, Mahomes would be the best quarterback that he's ever played with in his career and finally gives him a legitimate opportunity at a Super Bowl. With a deal benefiting all those involved, it makes too much sense for the Chiefs to target Green.
