The Cleveland Browns' pursuit of Deshaun Watson has made Baker Mayfield reevaluate his future with the team. Mayfield's statement on Tuesday night ignited trade speculation given how much it sounds like a potential goodbye.
Baker Mayfield Trade Rumors
The former No. 1 pick should have plenty of suitors if he does request out of Cleveland. Here's three possible trade destinations for Mayfield this offseason.
Baker Mayfield Trade Destinations
3. Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions could be a dark horse here. Though Jared Goff stepped up in the latter part of the 2021 campaign, nothing about his overall play made him the no-doubt franchise QB going forward. Mayfield still seemingly has untapped potential that was never discovered while dealing with constant turbulence in Cleveland. The Lions are in position to build around Mayfield and make him the centerpiece, which could unlock a new level of play from him. Detroit is armed with the No. 2, No. 34 and No. 66 picks in this year's draft, plus they own the Los Angeles Rams' first-rounder in 2023. They have the capital, and they also have John Dorsey working in their front office, who drafted Mayfield No. 1 overall in 2018 while serving as the Browns' GM.
2. Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are on the search for their next star after dealing Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Seattle has been linked to Deshaun Watson, so they're not afraid to be aggressive following the Wilson deal. The Seahawks have two exciting weapons in Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf that could help Mayfield produce at a high level, and new arrival Noah Fant is an excellent safety valve over the middle. Though some might have doubts after Mayfield's roller coaster 2021 season, he was also plagued by injuries and playing through several ailments. Mayfield seemed poised to break out after throwing for 26 TDs and just 8 INTs in 2020, so there's a next gear inside that Pete Carroll could help uncover.
1. Indianapolis Colts
The frontrunner for a Mayfield trade will likely be the Indianapolis Colts after they shipped out Carson Wentz. Indianapolis is in desperate need of stability under center after having a different Week 1 starting QB in each of the past four seasons. Mayfield has shown flashes of being a great quarterback, and he's only nearing 27 years old, meaning he could have a good decade of high-level football still ahead of him. Playing behind the Colts' elite offensive line is the perfect scenario for Mayfield after taking the fourth-most sacks in the league, which resulted in a heavy toll on his body. Mayfield should also mesh extremely well with Jonathan Taylor after suiting up alongside Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in Cleveland. There's already rumors that have suggested Indianapolis is Mayfield's preferred destination, making this outcome all the more likely.
