The Minnesota Vikings have high hopes for tight end Irv Smith Jr. After missing the entire 2021 NFL season thanks to a torn meniscus, Vikings fans crossed their fingers that he could stay healthy going forward. Unfortunately, it was revealed on Tuesday that might not be the case.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell has announced that Smith underwent thumb surgery on Tuesday. The procedure occurred towards the end of Monday's practice, forcing the 23-year-old to leave the session and spectate the remainder of it from the sidelines.

Irv Smith Injury Update

After last year's injury debacle, it's understandable that Minnesota's fanbase is concerned about Smith's opening week status. O'Connell told reporters he expects Smith to be ready for the start of the year, but his injury means that his preseason is ever before it truly began.

The hope is that Smith can build on the flashes of the promise he showed during his first two NFL campaigns. Over the course of 29 contests, he's recorded 66 receptions for 676 yards and seven touchdowns. He's also demonstrated reliability with a 73.3% catch rate and two career drops.

There's no question that the pressure will be on upon Smith's return. Not only is he expected to be the Vikings' No. 1 TE in the 2022 NFL season, but he's also in the final year of his rookie deal. If he can't live up to the hype as a former second-round selection, he may have to look for work elsewhere in 2023.

For now, Vikings will proceed with caution when it comes to Smith's recovery. After all, the healthiest version of the New Orleans native is what Minnesota needs in its uphill quest to challenge for a Super Bowl.

Vikings Super Bowl Odds

Even with Smith at 100% health, winning Super Bowl LVII will be tough for a Vikings squad that has only +4000 odds (T-No. 17) to do so on FanDuel Sportsbook. For reference, those odds translate to an implied probability of just 2.4%.
