There were rumblings throughout training camp that New Orleans Saints running back Latavius Murray could be on the chopping block. New Orleans confirmed those suspicions on Tuesday by releasing the veteran.

As a result, Tony Jones' fantasy outlook has surged as Alvin Kamara's primary backup.

Murray made the most of his touches in 2020, racking up 832 yards from scrimmage and 5 total touchdowns. He finished as RB34 in PPR scoring, but Jones made a push for playing time with a strong preseason.

It was Murray who got the boot after refusing to take a pay cut. He'll now be an in-demand veteran for teams in need of backfield help.

The Saints' decision to cut Murray loose showcases how strong of an impression Jones made in training camp.

The former Notre Dame back appeared in one game for New Orleans last year, but he showcased his potential in preseason. Jones turned 7 carries into 82 yards and 1 score against the Baltimore Ravens while adding 5 receptions for 38 yards.

Jones' flashes of a dual-threat skillset out of the backfield puts him in position to fill in seamlessly for Murray. The latter leaves behind 11.4 opportunities (9.7 rushes plus 1.7 targets) per game, and Jones should absorb the majority (if not all) of those looks.

The Saints' dire receiving corps to start the season also gives Jones a chance to carve out a role there as well. And if Kamara ever goes down, Jones would be gifted a leading role on a team that relies on production of the backfield.

Jones should be on every fantasy manager's radar after the Murray release. He has standalone value given Murray's 2020 finish in PPR scoring, and his path to a large workload is much simpler now.

With Jones rostered in just 5% of Yahoo! fantasy leagues, managers should be rushing to add him prior to kickoff.
