The Detroit Tigers have had a quiet offseason thus far. There was talk that they'd be spending more than usual this winter, but that has not materialized yet.

Tigers Sign Michael Lorenzen

The Tigers did make a move on Wednesday night though, signing starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen to a one-year deal, reportedly worth $8.5 million. Lorenzen spent last year with the Los Angeles Angels after playing the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Reds.

Lorenzen broke into the majors as a starter, but then spent the next six years with the Reds mainly coming out of the bullpen. Then, he went back to a starting role with the Angels last season, starting 18 games, albeit with a uninspiring 4.24 ERA.

Detroit will be hoping that a second consecutive season as a starter can bring even more improvement — after all his 4.24 ERA in 2022 blew away the 5.40 ERA he posted in his first season as a full-time starter.

Detroit's starters ranked just 23rd in the majors with a group 4.51 ERA in 2022, so any potential improvements in this area should be huge for their chances of bouncing back from that 66-win season.
