Despite entering the 2022 MLB season with somewhat promising expectations, the Detroit Tigers fell flat on their face in April. Detroit is just 7-14 and sits in last place in the AL Central division. Manager A.J. Hinch and the front office also had some tough decisions to make as the MLB calendar rolls into may.

The Tigers designated veteran catcher Dustin Garneau for assignment on Monday as part of a roster-cut deadline where all 30 teams around baseball trimmed their active rosters from 28 to 26 players.

As the team's third-string catcher, Garneau was the odd man out ahead of this deadline. The eight-year veteran backup saw action in eight games and tallied three hits across 11 plate appearances. He didn't allow a single passed ball during this brief stint.

Garneau has an opportunity to be picked up off waivers by another MLB franchise. If not, he'll return to Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers will need to turn things around quickly if they hope to keep pace in the AL Central. FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds show Detroit as +2500 to win the division after beginning the year at +750 odds.
