Few sports fans are as loyal and passionate as those in college football. With the dedication to their teams and the passion in heated rivalries, there's a reason fan bases are often referred to as "nations."

With that kind of pride rampant throughout the most competitive college football programs, sometimes it feels like a flag is the only thing missing from these being real nations.

That being said, Reddit user u/toms47 made this leap by designing college football flags that could represent the seven current FBS Independents on the gridiron, all of which are inspired by defining and iconic traits behind each school and its respective history.

According to u/toms47, the golden rectangle centered by the surrounding blue area is meant to symbolize the ceiling of Notre Dame's Basilica of the Sacred Heart by representing the many golden backgrounds of the frescoes inside, along with the blue interior around them. The seven separated blue sections are also representative of the seven side chapels found just outside of the Basilica.

Notre Dame was initially scheduled to take on the Navy Midshipmen in this year's Aer Lingus Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 29. However, after recent consultation with the Irish government, it was moved back stateside to avoid issues tied to the current global pandemic.

Barring any potential further scheduling changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Irish are now set to return to battle Saturday, Sept. 5, eyeing a 2020 season-opening matchup against Navy on the road at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
