The Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox's rivalry has had plenty of memorable moments over the years. Not only have the AL Central foes engaged in noteworthy battles on the diamond, but they've also stolen players from each other in free agency, ranging from Rudy Law to Rick Reichardt.

If the Royals want to end their seven-year playoff drought, it'd be wise for them to steal a free agent from the White Sox. Chicago had a lot of talent hit the open market this offseason, opening up the door for Kansas City to stick it to its rival by stealing one of those players.

Kansas City Royals Free Agency

The Royals starting starting rotation combined for a 4.76 ERA in 2022, ranking dead last in the American League. That's why it makes perfect sense for them to steal veteran right-handed starter Johnny Cueto away from the White Sox.

After spending six seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Cueto signed a minor-league deal with the White Sox in April before being promoted. The two-time All-Star wound up having a solid campaign, making his most appearances (25 games, 24 starts) since 2017, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA and 1.225 WHIP.

With Zack Greinke potentially hitting free agency, the Royals need someone like Cueto in the rotation. Besides, the 36-year-old hurler has experience with the organization. Acquired via trade seven years ago, Cueto played a big role in the Royals' 2015 World Series Championship, out-dueling the New York Mets' Jacob deGrom in Game 2.

It's clear that Cueto still has a lot to give at this stage of his career and could be one of the missing pieces to help take the Royals to the next level.
