Life without Russell Wilson has been tough for the Seattle Seahawks. After losing to the game that Wilson was injured in, the Seahawks followed it up with a 23-20 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Now, it's looking like the team is interested in adding another QB quarterback to the roster.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told Mike Salk of 710 ESPN on Monday that the team has reached out to veteran QB Cam Newton. The former NFL MVP has been a free agent since his release by the New England Patriots in August.

Cam Newton Rumors

Carroll didn't go in-depth when it came to the details of his conversation with Newton. All he said was that the Seahawks were doing their due dilligence on all available quarterbacks.

Newton was most recently the starting quarterback for the Patriots in 2020. He started 15 games for New England, completing 65.8% of his passes for an underwhelming 2,657 passing yards and 8 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Eighth-year veteran signal-caller Geno Smith has taken over under center in Wilson's absence. The 31-year-old has gone 33-for-49 (67.3%) so far for 340 yards, recording a pair of touchdowns and an interception.

It's tough to say if Newton in his current state would be a definite upgrade over Smith, but it's worth trying if Seattle wants to turn its season around. However, the former Patriots QB did say he was comfortable being a backup in New England, so he might be accepting of that role with the Seahawks too.

Seattle currently has the 18th-best odds (+8500) to win Super Bowl 56, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
