Amidst all the news of veterans and rookies getting cut prior to the 53-man roster deadline, the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a surprising trade. Defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is on his way to Philly, but the return for New Orleans has yet to be reported.

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Trade

Gardner-Johnson is entering the final year of his rookie contract and set to make $2.5 million in 2022. That's what led to his name being in the news at the beginning of the offseason as he aimed to sign a new deal with New Orleans. After talks broke down, the Saints had to find a trade partner, instead.

This move fills an immediate need for the Eagles after they released veteran Anthony Harris. Gardner-Johnson is capable of playing as a slot cornerback or shifting to the safety position. His experience will help him be a leader to younger defensive backs like Marcus Epps and K'von Wallace, too.

The 24-year-old has been stellar over his first three NFL seasons, racking up 161.0 tackles (15.0 for loss), 28 pass breakups, 5 interceptions and 3.0 sacks. Gardner-Johnson has also started 31 of his 43 games played and knows what it's like to appear in the playoffs. He checks every box for Philly.

It's unclear whether or not the Eagles are willing to provide Gardner-Johnson with the money he is looking for at this point. No matter what, a fresh start may be exactly what he needs. It's worth noting New Orleans and Philadelphia meet head-to-head at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 17.

The Eagles have odds set at +2000 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
