Ranking the Best Matchups of the Divisional Round
NFL fans just got a taste of the new Super Wild Card Weekend. "Super" would not be the word I'd use to describe it. Four of the six games were blowouts, and the officiating mistakes were probably the most memorable part of the whole thing.
Think of it like the seventh "Harry Potter" movie, though. It was a little boring, and mostly setup, but all will be forgiven if the NFL can deliver on the finale. And it should. Just take a look at the Divisional Round slate – having four exciting games feels like the biggest lock of the weekend.
But which matchup is the best? Let's rank all four of this weekend's games.
NFL Playoffs Best Matchups
4. Cincinnati Bengals vs. Tennessee Titans
Joe Burrow is the main attraction here. He's on an all-time hot streak, throwing for 1,215 yards with 10 touchdowns to no picks over his last three games. Those are the numbers you need if you're going to show up to the press conference looking like Adam Sandler in "Uncut Gems." But, the Tennessee Titans are one of the most boring No. 1 seeds we've had in a while – does anyone actually think they're the best team in the AFC? Don't get me wrong, this one will still be fun. But Burrow and the impending return of Derrick Henry aren't enough to move this game into the top three.
3. Los Angeles Rams vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I'm not an NFL memorabilia guy. I only own two pieces of NFL merch – a Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford hoodie and a 22-year-old Tom Brady jersey. But, my irrational love for both signal-callers isn't enough to vault this game into the top two. The Brady jersey has seen better days, to put it kindly, but the 44-year-old looks as good as ever. Brady getting knocked out before the NFC Championship just doesn't seem possible. Still, this game is absolutely loaded with star power on both sides of the ball and should come down to the wire.
2. San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers
This is a classic David vs. Goliath game, but there's real momentum brewing for an upset here. The San Francisco 49ers' dominant rushing attack is a nightmare matchup for the Green Bay Packers, who can't defend the run. We saw that play out back in 2019 when San Francisco blew out Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers will be looking for revenge – especially since SF famously passed on the presumptive league MVP back in the 2005 NFL Draft. Mix in the mentor/mentee relationship between the head coaches, and this game has the potential to be an all-timer.
1. Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs
This is the clear-cut best game of the weekend. Patrick Mahomes vs. Josh Allen has the potential to be this generation's answer to Manning vs. Brady. This will be the second postseason meeting between these two QBs, and Mahomes emerged with an easy victory last year. But these are the two most exciting QBs in football, and both are under 27 years old. This should be another chapter in a rivalry that could dominate the AFC for years to come.
