The 2021 NFL offseason has already brought plenty of intrigue, and that has included some surprising moves from the Las Vegas Raiders — including trading star lineman Rodney Hudson.
The Raiders have made another eyebrow-raising move on Thursday, giving a very harsh ultimatum to backup QB Marcus Mariota.
Mariota looked great when called upon last year, throwing for 226 yards and rushing for 88 in his lone appearance. The team can't afford to pay over $10 million for a backup, however.
That's understandable, but the timing of this move is really doing Mariota a disservice. Had they given him this ultimatum earlier, he could have been on the free agent market already. But teams have already been signing quarterbacks (like the Houston Texans giving Tyrod Taylor $12.5 million), so the market won't be nearly as hot by the time Mariota is released.
So basically, by waiting this long the team appears to be trying to strong-arm Mariota into taking a huge pay-cut.
This may ultimately free up some cap space, but it's not going to earn the Raiders any good will among players.
