The San Diego Padres already poached the biggest free agent from the Boston Red Sox when they signed Xander Bogaerts to a monster 11-year, $275 million contract last week.
The Padres apparently aren't done raiding the Red Sox for talent, however, as they're now looking to acquire one of Bogaerts' former teammates.
Padres Free Agency Rumors
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, San Diego is one of several teams targeting free-agent catcher Christian Vazquez. Vazquez played with Bogaerts in Boston from 2014-2022 before being unexpectedly traded to the Houston Astros last season.
The two were friends on the Red Sox, so perhaps Bogaerts can help recruit the 32-year-old. The Padres could use an upgrade at catcher after their backstops batted a combined .250/.308/.350 with 9 home runs last year.
While Vazquez struggled at the plate after his trade to the Astros, he's been a solid offensive catcher over the last few seasons, slashing .271/.3168/.416 since the beginning of 2019. He's also regarded as a good defensive catcher and has championship experience after winning two World Series, making him an attractive option to teams in need of catching help this winter.
