Nico Hoerner's Injury Snag is Bad News for Cubs

There isn't much for Chicago Cubs fans to be excited about these days as the team has dropped 15 of its last 17 games and currently sit 18 games under .500 with a 54-72 record. The bad news just keeps on coming as infielder Nico Hoerner hit an injury snag in his minor league rehab assignment.

Nico Hoerner Injury Update
Hoerner was making his first appearance with the High-A South Bend Cubs when he had to leave the game in the middle of his second at-bat. The 24-year-old was said to have felt “increased tension along his right abdomen” and will be reevaluated on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.
This isn't the news the Cubs' coaching staff was hoping to hear as Hoerner has already been out all month due to an oblique strain. The plan to play the young slugger at shortstop every day for the rest of the season is now in jeopardy as Hoerner may need more time to recover.
The former 2017 first-round pick has played well when healthy with the Cubs' major league squad this season slashing .313/.388/.776 through 39 games played. Overall, Hoerner has racked up 13 runs scored, 14 RBI, 15 walks and 3 stolen bases across a total of 152 plate appearances.
With the Cubs playoff hopes all but gone for the 2021 season, eyes are now set on what the roster will look like next summer. Hoerner is expected to play a big role on this team moving forward and his health is a key storyline to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.
