Every game counts for the New York Mets going forward as they compete in a tight battle to clinch a playoff berth. Following a 14-inning loss to the Braves, the Mets fell to 67-61 and are now two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second Wild Card spot.

Despite seven strong innings and a solo homer from Jacob deGrom (who provided all of the team's offense), the Mets missed several opportunities in extra innings to win the game. As it stands, the Mets have the fourth best odds to win the National League Pennant at +1300, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Mets are behind the Dodgers (-105), Braves (+400) and Cubs (+1000) to make the World Series, but are ahead of the Nationals (+1500), even though Washington currently has pole position in the NL Wild Card race. The Cardinals are also +1500 to win the NL Pennant, while the Brewers are +1800 and the Phillies are +2000.

Despite the crushing loss to the Braves, the Mets have still been on an impressive run since the All-Star break. They are an MLB-best 27-11 post-break, and 15-6 in August. Their only real thorn has been the Braves, who have won three of four games against New York since the break.

For the Mets to make the playoffs, they have to earn it. They face a gauntlet of clubs they are currently competing with, including their next series at home against the Cubs, as well as four combined series against the Braves, Phillies and Nationals.

The Mets will also host the Dodgers in September, and benefit greatly from playing six of their final 10 series at home. The Mets are 37-22 at Citi Field this season.
