New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso just became the first back-to-back Home Run Derby champion since Yoenis Cespedes accomplished the feat back in 2013-14. However, credit is due to his pitcher out on the mound as Mets bench coach Dave Jauss was throwing strikes all night long.

2021 Home Run Derby

An underrated parts of a player's strategy heading into this storied event is picking the right person to throw the baseball. While some of the choices last night struggled to throw consistent strikes in a quick manner, Jauss dominated the zone and tossed one hanger after another right over the plate.

It was the 64-year-old's second go around as a HR Derby pitcher as he tossed strikes to Nomar Garciaparra back in 1999. The human pitching machine allowed Alonso to crush a total of 74 home runs on the night. That is the second highest total in one derby of all-time, second only to Vladimir Gurrero Jr.'s total of 91 in 2019.

Alonso defeated Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez & Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto before meeting up with Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini in the finals. Mancini hit an impressive 22 home runs, but the Polar Bear walked it off by hitting his 23rd home run of the round in bonus time.

Jauss was getting shoutouts all night long from former players and current MLB catchers like New York Met James McCann. The newly appointed batting practice legend may have to give the fans what they want and run it back in 2022.
