Only two NFL teams have ever gone winless during the modern 16-game regular-season schedule. However, the league is adding a 17th game to the docket in 2021, giving unfortunate teams one more matchup to avoid going winless.
One of those 0-16 teams was the 2008 Detroit Lions, who then drafted Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft. With Stafford now gone, the Lions find themselves with a chance to go winless again.
The Lions and Houston Texans are the two teams with odds on FanDuel Sportsbook to go 0-17 this year.
NFL Odds to Go 0-17
Neither team is favored to actually go winless, but oddsmakers think there's a chance. Detroit has -7000 odds to win at least one game, and +2400 odds to go 0-17. Houston has -5000 odds to win at least one game, and +1700 odds to go 0-17 -- so if there's a team to go winless in 2021, it'll likely be the Texans.
The Lions are in the middle of a rebuild post-Stafford. New quarterback Jared Goff is a former Pro Bowler, but this roster has a ton of questions and it's not hard to see the offense being near the bottom of the league if their free-agent receiver signings of Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman don't work out.
Houston is a similarly huge question mark given Deshaun Watson's pending legal troubles and trade request. Tyrod Taylor, who's been a backup over the last three seasons, will likely be the team's starter. And, 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills could even get some burn this year. A Watson trade may lead to even more deals as the Texans load up on draft assets for a likely rebuild.
At least if these teams do go winless this season they'll have a top draft pick to look forward to in 2022.
