3 Players Who Won't Be on the Lions Roster Next Season

Nobody really had high expectations for the Detroit Lions this season. Still, the team has failed to meet those low expectations in the form of a 1-11-1 record at the end of Week 14.
The Lions will look toward the 2022 NFL Draft and free agency period to continue their rebuild. However, in order for new players to be brought in, that means some of the current players must depart.
Here's a look at three players who might not be on the Lions roster for the 2022 NFL season.
Detroit Lions Rumors
1. Tim Boyle, Quarterback
Make no mistake about it: Jared Goff will likely be Detroit's quarterback for the next few seasons. That still doesn't change the fact that the team needs to invest in a better backup than Tim Boyle. The 27-year-old lost his only career start this season, going 15-for-23 for 77 passing yards and a pair of interceptions. That's just not the type of player to trust if Goff ever goes down with a lengthy injury. The Lions paid Boyle over $2.3 million this season and they can likely find a better backup for a lesser cost.
2. Khadarel Hodge, Wide Receiver
With a weak wide receiver room to start 2021, the Lions claimed Khadarel Hodge off waivers back in September. The fourth-year pro went from playing 51% of offensive snaps in Cleveland last year to just 24% in Detroit, which is all you need to know about where he stands. Yes, he's used more in a special teams role (44%), but that spot should be given to someone with more upside. Hodge is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, which will make it easier for Detroit to part ways with him.
3. Nick Williams, Defensive Tackle
It's safe to say that Nick Williams' tenure with Detroit has been underwhelming. After recording 6.0 sacks and 42 total tackles over 16 games (five starts) with the Chicago Bears in 2019, the veteran defender has just 1.5 sacks and 46 total tackles in 27 games (26 starts) with Detroit since 2020. He'll turn 32 in February, so his best years may already be behind him. He'll also be hitting free agency this offseason and with him not fitting the Lions' preferred age range, Williams could be forced to move on.
