Lions Beat Out Division Rival for Latest Waiver Addition

The Detroit Lions continued their slew of offseason improvements by claiming former Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman John Cominsky off waivers on Tuesday. Although it's always great to add as much defensive depth as possible, the waiver claim is a bit sweeter for the Lions because they beat out a divisional rival to land the defender.
NFL insider Field Yates revealed on Wednesday morning that eight teams had a claim in for Cominsky, including the Lions. One of the other teams happened to be Detroit's NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings.
New Lions DL John Cominsky was as popular of a player as I can ever recall on waivers. 8 teams tried to claim him, per source: the Lions, Commanders, Colts, Browns, Texans, Cardinals, Vikings and Bengals.

Detroit had top priority and landed the former Falcon.
Detroit Lions Roster News
The Lions had top priority due to their placement in the 2021 NFL standings, so the Vikings didn't really have a chance to land Cominsky anyway. Still, it's a small victory for Detroit that could make a difference sometime this fall.
The Barberton, OH native was the Falcons' 135th overall pick at the 2019 NFL Draft but was never given a fair chance to shine, starting just one of his 27 career games. He's still managed to record 41 total tackles (4.0 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two broken-up passes.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell knows how to get the most out of his young players and management is hoping he can do the same with Cominsky. He's got a solid motor and can defend well against the run, which could help a Detroit defense that gave up 135.1 rushing yards per game in 2021 (No. 28).
It'll be interesting to see if Cominsky ends up seeing any playing time in either of the Lions' two meetings against the Vikings next season. Detroit is 1-8 in its last nine matchups against Minnesota, making all the help they can get a necessity.
Detroit Lions NFC North Odds
Even though the Lions have tons of promise, FanDuel Sportsbook doesn't view them as much of an NFC North threat just yet. The Green Bay Packers are the -170 favorites to win the division, followed by the Vikings (+280), Lions (+850) and Chicago Bears (+950).
