The Washington Football Team is ready to compete now.
Their top-ranked defense helped them capture the NFC East despite weathering through several changes under center. They addressed quarterback this offseason by signing veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who's the perfect gunslinger to help this offense take the next step.
Fitz isn't a long-term solution, though, and ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay thinks Washington could select an intriguing QB with their second-round pick.
Kellen Mond Washington
McShay believes WFT would be a great fit for Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. He's not regarded as one of the premier QB prospects in this draft, so it'd be good if he can sit behind a veteran for a year or two to get some seasoning. There are not many better mentors around the league than Fitz.
"But if you're talking about a second-round pick, after you've taken someone in the first round ... Chicago, Washington's another team that could want to develop a quarterback with (veteran) Ryan Fitzpatrick there probably just for two, three years at the most. I think Mond would be the next best quarterback. "- Todd McShay
Washington is built to be a long-term contender. They have a top defense headlined by Chase Young, Daron Payne and Montez Sweat, who are all under the age of 25. They also have dangerous young offensive weapons like Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson. There's still potential waiting to be tapped.
That makes nabbing Mond in the second round a smart move. Fitzpatrick can lead the team current team for a few years before passing on the torch to Mond. WFT would set itself up for future success by nabbing a quarterback in this draft.
