The Dallas Cowboys shook up the quarterback depth chart on Tuesday morning by releasing backups Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci. The moves show that Cooper Rush has essentially locked down the No. 2 role. Team owner Jerry Jones was able to provide some clarity on the whole situation.

Cowboys News

Jones' expressed some excitement over what Rush brings to the table. The 27-year-old's familiarity with the Cowboys' offense seems to be what won him the backup job. Rush played well in the preseason completing 29 of 46 passes for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Reports claim the team is more likely to target DiNucci as a practice squad option instead of Gilbert. That's if DiNucci clears NFL waivers, of course. The former seventh-round pick started one game for Dallas in 2020 completing 23 of his 43 pass attempts for 219 yards and 0 touchdowns in a loss.

Starter Dak Prescott is coming off a devastating ankle injury as well as a shoulder strain. The Cowboys have to be prepared in case he needs to be eased into action early on in the season. For now, Dallas fans are holding their breath in hopes that the Pro Bowl QB is healthy & ready to go.

The Cowboys are aiming to bounce back in 2021 and remain the favorites to take home the NFC East division title with odds set at +130, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Dallas also has the 11th-best odds to win the Super Bowl at +2800.
