NFL head coaching positions are being filled left and right, yet the Miami Dolphins remain in search of a new team leader. Well, it looks like a frontrunner has emerged for the job. Miami is reportedly zeroing in on San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as its top candidate.

Dolphins Head Coach

McDaniel has become a popular name in the head coaching market after finding success in his sole season spent as the 49ers OC. San Francisco finished the 2021 season ranked amongst the top 10 NFL teams in statistics such as total yards per game (365.3) and average scoring margin (+3.7).

The 38-year-old got into the NFL coaching world by interning with the Denver Broncos in 2005. He has since spent all but two years working alongside with Kyle Shanahan. Keep in mind that McDaniel has spent time with six different teams, yet he has never been in charge of calling offensive plays.

Videos of McDaniel's intricate answers during press conferences have recently been making their way around social media. He has stressed the importance of a collaborative system, which is exactly what the Dolphins need after implementing three different offensive strategies in three years.

McDaniel would be tasked with turning around a Dolphins offense that finished amongst the NFL's bottom ten teams in points (20.1) and total yards (307.0) per game. The potential is there, though. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle make for an intriguing duo.

Miami will aim to compete in a tough AFC East division in 2022 and capture its first playoff berth since 2016.
